Hicks Consultants does not design mechanical remediation systems. Our expertise resides in providing risk-based remedial strategies that employ natural attenuation. At sites where regulatory agencies require excavation, bioventing or other mechanical techniques due to the risk profile of the site, or where owners desire rapid site restoration for business reasons, we provide technical and financial management of these programs. We have improved performance of petroleum hydrocarbon removal systems. We have also designed disposal cells for naturally-occurring radioactive materials. However, for most of our clients, we successfully argue that turning off existing mechanical remedies is consistent with regulation, is cost-effective and is often better for the environment.
In our work as a Technical Advisor to the Downtown Action Team in Albuquerque, we examined the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) proposed remedies for the Fruit Avenue Superfund Site. EPA maintains that an $8,000,000, 30-year engineering and monitoring project is required to eliminate a threat to Albuquerque's drinking water supply. We concluded that Albuquerque might attain the same level of protection through a 2-year, $150,000 effort. You may read our reports and correspondence with the EPA here.
